My E-Backpack (Year 2)

Project Overview

The realization of this project is base on a collaborative initiative involving many partners in the learning community. The partners are School District 2, Department of Education (DOE), Riverview Middle School, Apple Canada, Red Ball Internet, University of South Maine (Dr. David Silvernail), students and parents.

In October of 2010, Riverview Middle School will embark on a unique learning journey utilizing the iPod touch as a learning and teaching resource tool. Five grade seven classes, three Immersion classes and two English classes (125 total student) will be part of the project including all subject teachers (5) involved with those classes. The focus areas are literacy, numeracy and science.

A RAFT environment (Remote Access Field Trip) will be developed! Students and teachers will use the iPod touch as tool to extend, to enhance, and to enrich their learning. Students on field trips will have access to internet to search, explore, investigate, experience, discover, collect data using probes and share it on a virtual collaborative platform (Provincial Portal) so all students from the learning community can benefit from those resources. Students will find, develop and create information relevant to the subject (learning standards) and produce high quality curriculum work. This environment will expect students to communicate and collaborate with each other and they will be required to accomplishing learning tasks and beyond. For example, creating graphs based on the data received by the students on the field trip.

No bells, no walls and no borders and yes to anyplace, anytime learning! Through the Department of Education (DOE) collaborative projects program, NB students are connected with other students around the world; these students will communicate, learn from each other and share cultural differences and similarities. Students will reflect on their learnings and write journals, blogs and/or work assignments in which teachers will have access, monitor and assess virtually.

Research Study

This project will explore and compare the student behaviours and learnings in the area of literacy and numeracy between two student groups. A control group and non-control group of five teachers will be a part of the project. The project will also compare the learning of the students of the English and French Immersion programs. The tool will be integrated in all other subjects as well. Dr. David Silvernail from the University of South Maine will be a resource in preparation and implementation of the study. In addition, ten school administrators will be identified and will explore ways on how to use the iPod Touch as an administrative tool.
